Well, it is very conceivable that the porn story was a PR attack on NSF and it is natural to believe so. But is there a genuinely rational reason why this explanation is “clear” to you?
My personal guess is that employees at pretty much every place in the world are watching porn, sometimes, and it is up to others who begin to emphasize such things.
So I wouldn’t be shocked if they were doing these things – do you actually question they did? If you agree with me, then the question is whether one should pretend that it’s so unusual and unacceptable that this happened at NSF.
I don’t think it is so extraordinary.
Of course not, but the history of events is enough for me to make the guess.
Oh no, I don’t. What is more important is that NSF is getting attacked, and several, how to say it softly, naive physicists-bloggers including myself decided to increase the coverage of the story instead of doing what is the most natural – defending NSF. So, the real question is: what is it possible to do in this situation to help NSF? Saying that watching porn is “not unusual and acceptable” is a kind of defence, but a passive one, you are still getting hit. What can be done on the active side? Right now I have no idea.
Cheers,
Dmitry.
