209. Gmail can now work offline

Sorry for the offtopic, but as I know, many of you (as well as myself, of course) currently use Gmail as their main email account. Is Gmail the most popular email platform among scientists? May very well be, support of conversations is too attractive :-)

I have no doubts that many times the fact that your Gmail inbox cannot be accessed offline made you extremely unhappy. I am glad to announce that you don’t need to be frustrated anymore!

Login to your Gmail account, click the “Labs” tab and enable “Offline Gmail”. If you have Google Gears support installed, your inbox will be accessible offline. Here is a little video that shows the functionality that you will acquire:

  • Digg
  • Reddit
  • StumbleUpon
  • Technorati

Wow, I completely misunderstood that the Gears were supposed to work offline and cache things. Very interesting. I supposed that they were just some ordinary online widgets, perhaps with some unusual design.

:) I discovered them when it turned out that Wordpress supports Gears – it particular, Gears cache many things and editing in Wordpress becomes lighning fast on machines where Google Gears is enabled.

Cheers,
Dmitry.
